Hydrology & Water Quality

This program assists UF faculty in the County in implementing Extension education programs focused on the impact of the Everglades restoration process on agriculture and natural resources. These programs make available information about water-use practices related to agriculture, such as irrigation and water conservation, that will improve the compatibility of agriculture with the natural ecosystem and the expanding urban population in south Florida. Other aspects of the program involve participation in state major programs, developing County in-service training programs, authoring electronic (EDIS) and hard copy materials, contributing to newsletters, carrying out demonstration trials and leading planning and reporting efforts in hydrology and water conservation.

Soil & Water Chemistry & Nutrient Management

The soil & nutrient management extension program serves a wide audience, including county extension agents, commercial crop growers, crop consultants, suppliers of fertilizers and seeds, solid waste management companies, horticulturists in botanic gardens, and researchers. There are two main focuses within this program, nutrient management and soil amendments.

With nutrient management, the program's goals include increasing the knowledge and adoption of new fertilizer management practices; conducting field demonstrations on the proper nutrition of various crops; educating county extension agents and other state specialists on nutrient management; and providing fertilizer recommendations to growers who have calcareous soils.

The program also is working to provide information and education on the use of soil amendments for crop production, focusing on introducing new cover crops to growers through field demonstrations; and providing recommendations of utilization of composts and cover crops to growers.
