After the
heliconia buds have been rinsed they are agitated in 80% ethanol for 30
seconds. |
| Immediately
after, the buds are continually agitated in 15% bleach for 15
minutes. 2 to 3 drops of Tween 20 are added to the beaker before the diluted bleach
is poured. |

When 15
minutes has expired the buds are placed in sterile water. |

The buds
are trimmed down by about one third and placed into a 7.5% bleach solution
for 10 minutes. They are then drained and placed into sterile
water.

The
heliconia buds are taken from the sterile and are placed in to medium
consisting of:
