Downy Mildew of Basil
Research
Dr. Patel’s primary focus has been on the management of downy mildew of basil which is caused by Peronospora belbahrii. However, Dr. Patel also design and conduct experiments for control of several vegetable diseases. In the past, Dr. Patel worked with multiple crops and variety of plant pathogens that cause diseases. His professional research career has provided advanced knowledge for management of plant diseases through his numerous peer-reviewed publications and outreach activities.
Extension (Outreach)
Research has advanced much knowledge for control of plant diseases. However, this knowledge must be reached to growers, consumers and stakeholders through outreach activities. Dr. Patel has been very active in assisting Dr. Zhang for organizing field days and publishing extension articles. In fact, he has given talks during annual Basil Workshop hosted at Homestead FL and Brunswick, NJ to update research activities to the stakeholders. Some of his applied work has been published in extension focused journals.
Plant Disease Diagnosis
Dr. Patel has been helping Plant Clinic to diagnose vegetable diseases. Growers in Miami-Dade County brings in several diseased vegetable samples in Dr. Zhang's lab. Dr. Patel identifies the associated pathogens that cause diseases on vegetables. Due to continuous involvement of Dr. Patel's disease diagnosis activity, he found three new diseases from Florida. These three new diseases are anthracnose of arugula, anthracnose of common thyme and elm canker.
Publications
Dr. Jaimin Patel has published 17 research articles, 5 extension (outreach) publications and numerous abstract and conference papers. These research articles were published in top peer-reviewed journals in the field of plant pathology including Plant Disease, Phytopathology, Crop Protection, Molecular Plant-Microbe Interactions, Crop Science, Applied and Environmental Microbiology and few other.
